Art vs Fashion: Castello Sforzesco, Milano Italia

ART

The statue of the Madonna is located in one of the various rooms in the Castello Sforzesco  in Milano, Italia.  The Cappella Ducale ( Room 12) was commissioned by Galeazzo Maria to Tuscan architect Benedetto Ferrini. The Madonna  del Coazzone was commissioned to sculptor Pietro Antonio Solari to adorn the Fabbrica del Duomo, the statue depicts Virgin Mary absorbed in prayer. The marble statue dates back to the second half of the 16th century. A few details, such as her dress and hair braided in a long plait, recall the Women fashion in the Renaissance. The name 'Madonna del Coazzone' is derived from a local dialect spoken in Lombardy, the word 'coazzone' meaning long plait of hair (Pietro Antonio Solari).  The statue shows a full length dress with pleating, a synched waist and a decorative neckline.

VS

FASHION

The Milano Moda Donna in Milan, Italy started with a retro and "hippy chic"with Angelo Marani and his Fall/Winter 2011/2012 collection. The collection was filled with romance and seductress of the 1970's with long maxi silhouettes and funky accessorizes. This long maxi dress is made out of Raglan and metallic Lame. The 3/4 gathered sleeved dress has great tailoring detail especially with the Pintucks and pleats (McCallum, Lindsay). The Madonna del Coazzone is wearing a long maxi dress with pleats as well. Pleats have been used for centuries and show great fabric detail and excellent tailoring. The dress has great fluidity and shine while creating a feminine silhouette with the brown waist belt. The waist is synched on the statue, most likely with fabric but the silhouette and pleating both are represented from the statue and the dress. The Angelo Marani dress does not have any neck embellishments but the metallic color and solid color allows great flexibility when accessorizing.  Dresses have become very solid but the accessories have shown greater detail. This shows transition from the second half of the 16th century where the embellishment was embroidered on to the dress to the earliest part of the 21st century where we wear the  detail as a necklace. The 'Madonna del Coazzone' depicts a great representation of a beautiful silhouette  that has been heavily repeated and used throughout many collections.
