ART
VS
FASHION
The Duomo is the largest Gothic cathedral and the second highest Catholic Cathedral in the world. This holds thousands of inspiration for any designer and every inch can be related to fashion in some way. The Duomo is in Piazza Duomo in Milan, Italy and was created by the archbishop Antonio Da Saluzzo, and chief engineer Nicolas de Bonaventure in 1386. It took several hundred years to complete and many generations to finally see the final piece. The mix of centuries of architecture and Italian sculpture that it goes from the Late Renaissance of the Pellegrini to the Baroque one of Francesco Maria Richini, to the pseudo-Gothic Napoleonic of the Acquisti justifies the length of time it took to complete the project.
The picture surrounds the giant green bronze doors at the front of Duomo. There are four lines on the wall that have different design detail; one with flowers, circles and other details. They are in between blank thicker pieces of the wall to even out the details. The Afghan white sheer ¾ maxi dress has a plunging neckline designed as a tunic/caftan and a dolman was designed for the Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The details around the neck resemble the third linear detail on the Duomo and are repeated throughout the dress. All of the design details from the Duomo can be seen in all different sizes and direction on this very sensual dress.
The dress detail and fabric can be used and seen through many different time periods. True lace was created in the 15th and 16th century, during the same time that the Duomo was being built. Other time periods include; the 1930’s and 1940’s where lace, sheer and skin were racy but in. The high waist shorts peaking through the dress also justify the 1940’s trends. Lace was not just seen than but lace has been seen in the past couple of years in embroidery, detail and used as the main fabric. Lace will continue to be used for many years in any form. The artist pays close attention to detail and history due to the cut and fabric. Designers have keen eyes and are trained to see detail. The detail of the Duomo and any art piece can be related to fashion.
